Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Mask Review

I do not talk about hair very often here on the blog but I assure you I do have it and I have occasional waves of wanting to take care of it and keep it nourished. A little background about myself and hair, I am a licensed cosmetologist who was raised by another licensed cosmetologist so I have lived my entire life around hair care and styling and that makes me quite picky and discerning when it comes to product I use and believe in. This is also why I don’t talk about hair care very much because I rarely find products worth mentioning, since going cruelty-free some years ago haircare remains the most challenging beauty category for me to find suitable product for my hair texture and needs. I have super curly/kinky hair that’s very prone to dryness so I’m always looking for ways to hydrate and deep conditioners are the core of my haircare routine.

I have been following Briogeo for a few years now and have found myself very attracted to their brand, both esthetically as well as their non-use of silicones in their formula. I don’t believe silicones are the devil when it comes to hair care but it’s something I only want to see in styling products rather than products I’m applying to my hair to feed and provide nutrition to my strands. Previously I have used their co-wash or cleansing conditioner and I really enjoyed it for what I needed it for, nice slip for detangling if you also have curly hair.

A few of my truths on hair maintenance and repair

-       Nothing will fuse together your spilt ends CUT. THEM. OFF.

-       If your hair is over processed, deep conditioner can slow down the breakage but your hair will never be the same until the last of the over processed hair is cut off.

Why do you have to cut off the damage?

-       Damage migrates, hair splits up the shaft and not cutting it may cause the breakage to affect the new and healthy portion of your hair.

Realistic expectations to have from deep conditioner

-       Hydration

-       Increased Bounce

-       Reduced Frizz

-       Shine

Unrealistic expectations to have from deep conditioner

-       New Texture

-       Rapid hair growth

-       Magically styled hair after rinsing

“Keratin proteins banish split ends” Banish split ends? More honestly what this statement means is that if regularly apply protein to the hair it can help strengthen your hair and make your strands less susceptible to splitting but please remember NOTHING will magically bind your hair back together.

-       Reduces Frizz

How I use it

I like to make the most of every deep conditioner I use by applying generously and then putting on a plastic shower cap and sitting under my hooded dryer for 20-30 minutes. This allows for the conditioner to be absorbed by your hair as much as possible, there for you’re getting the most out of it. Admittedly I do have my lazy days, but even then, I force myself to sit for at least 15 minutes because I have really noticed a difference in my hair when I don’t add the additional step the dryer.

Is the Briogeo worth it?

While the $36 price tag for an 8oz container is definitely steep I really believe it to be worth it if you struggle to find effective deep conditioner. I have loved the changes I have seen in my hair since incorporating the Briogeo deep conditioning mask into my hair care routine. My hair is more easily managed and softer.
